So last time in our Internet marketing journey we left you with our first website. As we mentioned previously this was a site that we purchased already built with its own customer management and email auto-responder system.

Now let’s step forward a few months into early 2009.

We were spending more time online and heard that an Australian man, named Ed Dale, was offering a free program called the 30 Day Challenge. The object of Ed’s challenge was to show beginners to Internet marketing how to set up and build their own website. The end goal of the challenge being to make their very first dollar online.

So it was with some excitement that my whole family of four jumped on board and each signed up to the challenge. We began by learning how to research and find a niche that we were interested in that was also full of ‘hungry’ buyers.

Our son decided on a website in the photography niche and built a site aimed at teaching digital photography basics. He wrote several blog articles and added them to his website.

Our daughter loves gardening and so she decided on a website that revolved around raised gardens beds. She was also happy to add multiple posts to her garden blog.

My husband searched for some niche ideas and came up with the forex (foreign exchange) currency market. He was very excited and set out to build his site with loads of articles about fx robots and different forex auto trading systems.

I struggled to find a niche. This was something that I just could not seem to get my head around. It needed to be a topic that interested me so that I could stay motivated and write about it and also something that had the prospect of making sales.

In the end I built a website around pregnancy and getting pregnant as that was something that I was hoping for at that point in time. Out of the four websites that my family created mine was the least successful. I just found that I really struggled finding good ideas to write content on.

One of the criteria for the challenge was to ensure that there were quality affiliate products or services that we could write about and promote on our sites. Hence we each added in affiliate links to our blogs and also a couple of banners with links to the products that we wanted to promote.

At the end of the 30-day challenge my family had created four new websites. This in itself was a great milestone, as we had never known how to do this previously.

We were not successful however in making our first dollar during the 30 days. But we did have the skeleton that we needed and the basic knowledge to move forward.

Over the coming weeks we began to bring in affiliate commissions from my husband’s forex website. These sales even continue till today (some 6 years later), but have dropped off since we are not really doing anything currently with the website.

Over the past 6 years we have also made a couple of hundred dollars in sales from the digital photography website.

After the 30 day challenge our two young adult kids lost interest as they did not see that first dollar come in. Hence it was just my husband and I who continued working in our online business.

What has been your experience in getting started making money online? We would love to read your comments. So please leave your thoughts and experiences below. We will be sure to reply to you too.

Quote Think Twice Before You Speak

In my last blog post I discussed our first website that we developed back in 2008. You can read this article here if you want to recap “Our First Website Online”.

I mentioned in this post that I would do things differently now from what we did all those years ago. This leads me to today’s article.

We invested a significant amount of money when we got started with little return. But you can learn from our journey and do things in a less expensive and less stressful way.

Have you ever heard that saying “You don’t know what you don’t know”?

This is a statement that really resonates with me. You may have even heard me mention it in past articles on my website as I truly believe it is a good point to keep in mind at all times.

When you are getting started in building an online Internet business there are so many different facets of online marketing that you are not even aware of. So how can you know where to get started and how to move forward in the best and fastest way possible?

Back in 2008 if we had someone to help us with all the basics then our journey would have been a lot smoother and much more direct to achieving our goals!

What do you need to begin in your online business?

The answer to that question depends on what it is you want to achieve and how you decide to go about reaching your goals.

Let’s assume that you are totally new to the Internet marketing world and you want to get started in the fastest way possible. Then you may decide to become an affiliate and to promote a quality product to those you are in contact with.

You may be thinking, “What is an Affiliate?

Great question. An affiliate is a person who promotes someone else’s product or service. There are many websites online where you can obtain a unique affiliate link that means when someone clicks through from your link and then purchases that you make a commission! One great place to get started with affiliate marketing is Clickbank. Click to visit. We will discuss Clickbank more in future posts.

This could bring in your first dollars online!

Ideally, at least down the track, you do want to have your own website. This is like your own piece of Internet real estate. But to get started it is possible to begin making an online income without owning your own website.

One way to do this is to set up a Facebook page for your business. This is different from your own personal Facebook page. Go to this link to begin the process: Create Facebook Page

As you start to get visitors to your Facebook page you need to remember to add value to those who read your page. This means you do not want to begin by promoting, but rather by sharing tips or ideas with your readers to help them achieve their own goals or to solve their own problems.

Once you have shared some great advice and ideas then you are ready to provide your affiliate link with your readers. Please be sure to only recommend products or services that are high quality. It is best if you can purchase the product first or contact the seller, explain what you are doing and ask them if they would provide you with a complimentary copy for your review purposes. Some vendors will supply you with a free copy.

When you are confident that you know of a quality product then get your affiliate link and use this to promote to your readers.

The process that I have shared above can also be used on a free blog that you can set up at Note: this is different from that you install on your own domain name and hosting. We will discuss this option more in future posts.

So as you can see from this article there are still several things that you need to do when getting started even when you do it without the hassle of buying a domain and building your own website.

Still if you truly do desire to make an income online then you need to begin somewhere. Affiliate marketing is as good a place as anywhere to get started bringing in commissions.

Note: I am creating a Definition page where you can learn what some of the terms used in the online Internet marketing world actually mean. I will include the link here as soon as the page is live on my blog.

Please leave your comment below and let me know what your thoughts are on my articles. Perhaps you may even want to share where you are in your own Internet journey. I look forward to reading your comments.

Our First Website Online

Continuing on from my post “March 2008 The Beginning of Change” we have still stepped back 7 years ago into 2008.

While at the wealth creation workshop we heard from a variety of speakers. Each speaker shared his or her own preferred method of making money. Many of these focused on the Internet.

One of the speakers was Dale Beaumont. He shared about his idea for making an online income through a unique membership website. His program was called the “Mega Success Club”.

Dale went above and beyond. He allowed people to come along to another weekend event where the specifics of the websites were outlined in exact detail. He even threw in a delicious smorgasbord lunch for all attendees.

During this weekend event all participants could decide if they wanted to invest in Dale’s offer. If they decided that they were not interested then they owed nothing.

This really impressed me. In fact, almost all of the attendees decided to proceed and invest.

My husband, our two young adult children and I all attended Dale’s Mega Success Club weekend. We also brought one of our son’s best friends with us, as he was already involved in computer programming. His opinion was also helpful in the decision that we made.

So after the two days of going through what Dale was providing we did decide to go ahead and invest in our own membership website. The cost was several thousand dollars, but at the time we believed that it was the correct decision to make.

[Aside: after seven years in the Internet marketing circle we would have made a different decision, because now we know how to build and set up our own websites. But back in 2008 we knew very little about the online world of making money.]

Dale’s mega success club supplied each purchaser with a unique website fully stocked with a variety of pdfs, audios and videos from leaders in a range of industries related to all areas of setting up and running an online business.

We got to select our domain name and the design that we wanted on our site. Each of our family enjoyed using Apple Macs rather than PCs and this influenced the domain name that we chose.

The domain that we decided on was You can see our original website at

Please note that the website is still visible, but no longer works as it did initially. I plan on updating and reworking this website over the coming months.

This design was created over the coming week by Dale’s team. Some of the text and features on the website we had control over and could edit ourselves. While other features could only be changed by Dale’s design team. We found this somewhat limiting over the coming months, as we wanted to make changes to the site.

The model was based around driving traffic to the website and offering the visitors five free gifts to get them to opt in.

Once they signed up for the free gifts they started to receive emails through an auto-responder that was built into the website and included with our purchase. These automated emails shared with our visitors how they could take up a $1 offer to get started in the membership site.

After the initial $1 offer they would then be charged $47 each month. We would receive about half of this $47 and Dale would receive the other half to cover his fees. Dale provided website hosting and ongoing support.

Knowing what we do now we could have made a better go of this opportunity. But all those years ago we know absolutely nothing about traffic or driving traffic. Hence we found it tough to get visitors to our website or to get any people signing up to our email list.

Over the following months we did get dozens of people opting into our list and enjoying the five free gifts that we gave them.

A handful people of these visitors even went on to sign up for the $1 trial offer. Then a few of these did join the monthly club and began to pay $47. The problem was that after a couple of months they decided to leave as they had gone through the material and did not want to keep paying.

So after a large investment we really only made back approximately $300, which did not even come close to covering our purchase costs.

Next blog post I will continue with some tips from our own personal experience for getting started in an online business.

Note I have set up a new category named “My Online Journey”. Inside this category you will find all the posts that relate to our journey in our online business since we first got started in 2008.
